A classic American dessert made with tender, spiced apples baked inside a flaky pie crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Perfect Pie Crust Recipe
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 8 cups thinly sliced apples (peeled and cored)
  • 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Set aside a 9-inch pie plate and preheat the oven to 425°F.
  2. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium-low heat.
  3. Add the apples, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Cook until the apples soften, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let cool.
  5. Divide the prepared pie dough in half and roll one disc to about 1/8-inch thick.
  6. Transfer the rolled dough into the pie plate.
  7. Make the egg wash by whisking the egg and water together.
  8. Transfer the cooled apple filling into the prepared crust.
  9. Roll out the second disc of dough and place on top, or cut into strips to create a braid.
  10. Cut vents in the pie crust and crimp the edges to seal.
  11. Brush the pie with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar (if desired).
  12. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce to 350°F and bake until golden brown and bubbly, about 40 minutes.
  13. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes
