A showstopping dessert made easy with a German chocolate box mix, gooey caramel, and crunchy pecans.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 3 eggs (as per package directions)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 (10 to 11 ounce) bag Kraft caramels (unwrapped)
  • 1 stick butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped (toasted)
  • 1 (16-ounce) can chocolate frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions adding eggs, oil, and water. Stir until smooth but do not overmix.
  3. Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and smooth it into an even layer. Bake for 15 minutes.
  4. While the cake layer bakes, melt caramels, butter, and evaporated milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  5. Remove from heat after the mixture is smooth and pourable.
  6. Pour the warm caramel evenly over the baked cake layer.
  7. Sprinkle chocolate chips and chopped pecans over the caramel layer.
  8. Spoon the remaining batter over the topping, spreading lightly.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for about 20 minutes until set.
  10. Allow to cool completely before spreading frosting on top.
  11. Slice and serve.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, choose dairy-free cake mix and vegan caramels and margarine. Use milk chocolate chips for a sweeter flavor or walnuts instead of pecans.
