These Classic Soft and Chewy Sugar Cookies are sweet, soft, and slightly chewy, making them a perfect snack for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Roll the dough into balls and then roll them in the additional granulated sugar.
  6. Place the balls on an ungreased baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  8. Let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, ensure butter is at room temperature and do not overmix the dough.
