Tender layers of potatoes bathed in a rich cream-garlic sauce and topped with melted cheese, creating a comforting side dish perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds potatoes, sliced very thin (Yukon Gold or russet)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyere or mild Swiss)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: fresh herbs for garnish (chives or parsley)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the heavy cream and season with salt and pepper. Simmer gently, then remove from heat.
  4. Arrange half the potato slices in a greased baking dish in an even layer.
  5. Pour half of the cream mixture over that layer, then add the remaining potato slices on top.
  6. Pour the rest of the cream evenly over the potatoes. Press down gently to settle the cream.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly across the top.
  8. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  9. Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

For best results, slice potatoes uniformly. You can mix cheeses for added flavor or use fresh herbs for garnishing.
