Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread (day-old or slightly stale)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing the baking dish)

Instructions

  1. Grease your baking dish with butter.
  2. Slice the French bread into thick slices and arrange them snugly in the dish.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt until smooth.
  4. Pour the custard evenly over the bread, pressing lightly to soak the mixture.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top of the soaked bread.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until golden and custard is set.
  9. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Serve warm with powdered sugar, fresh berries, or a drizzle of maple syrup. Pairs well with savory items for a balanced brunch.
