A cozy casserole featuring seared beef patties in a creamy gravy, perfect for weeknights and potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Mashed potatoes, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, add the ground beef, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until combined, then shape into 6 to 8 oval patties.
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, optionally adding oil. Brown the patties on both sides, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.
  4. In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour and whisk into the pan drippings until smooth.
  5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and milk, stirring until thickened, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in sour cream and melted butter until smooth.
  7. Arrange the patties in a baking dish, pour gravy over them, and bake for 20 to 25 minutes.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or a side of choice.

Notes

Use ground beef with some fat for juicy patties. For a lighter version, leaner beef may need added olive oil when searing.
