Perfectly balanced chocolate chip cookies with crisp edges and chewy centers, ideal for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups (280 g) all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 3/4 cup (170 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3/4 cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • Optional: flaky sea salt for sprinkling, 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F and position racks in the middle.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. Cream softened butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, mixing until combined, then stir in vanilla.
  5. In two additions, add dry ingredients and mix on low speed just until no dry streaks remain. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips and nuts (if using) with a spatula.
  7. Chill dough for 30 minutes (longer for deeper flavor) or skip for a quicker bake.
  8. Scoop 2 tablespoon portions onto a lined baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are golden brown and centers look slightly underdone.
  10. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For chewier cookies, use more brown sugar. Chilling dough helps improve flavor and texture.
