Delicious bite-sized churro bites made in an air fryer, offering a crispy texture with less oil and fuss. Perfect for snacks or desserts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar (plus extra for coating)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (or plant-based butter for vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Cooking spray or a neutral oil for spraying
  • Cinnamon sugar for coating (suggested: 1/4 cup sugar + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)

Instructions

  1. Place the water, 1/4 cup sugar, and butter in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until it comes to a gentle boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  2. Immediately add the flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir quickly until the mixture pulls together into a smooth dough with no dry streaks.
  3. Let the dough cool for about 5 minutes so it is warm but not steaming.
  4. Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the basket or line it with a perforated parchment made for air fryers.
  6. Pipe small, bite-sized rounds or short ridged sticks directly into the basket, spacing pieces about 1 inch apart.
  7. Lightly spray the piped dough with cooking spray or brush with a little oil to encourage even browning.
  8. Air fry for 10 to 12 minutes, checking at 8 minutes; they should be puffed and golden brown. Turn or shake the basket once if your air fryer has hot spots.
  9. Remove the warm bites and immediately toss them in the cinnamon sugar so it sticks while they are still hot.

Notes

For gluten-free option, use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend. For less sweetness in the dough, reduce the sugar to 2 tablespoons.
