Tender cube steak simmered in a savory onion-and-mushroom sauce for a comforting, hands-off dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds cube steak (beef)
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup (10 to 11 ounces)
  • 1 cup beef broth (low-sodium if preferred)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 medium onion, sliced
  • Optional: 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced

Instructions

  1. Lightly season both sides of the cube steak with salt and pepper.
  2. Place the steaks in the bottom of a Crock Pot in a single or slightly overlapping layer.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, and beef broth until smooth.
  4. Pour the soup mixture evenly over the steaks so they are mostly covered.
  5. If you like, scatter the sliced onions and mushrooms across the top.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours until the steaks are fork-tender, or on high for 3 to 4 hours if short on time.
  7. Once cooked, lift steaks carefully into a serving dish and spoon the gravy over them.
  8. Taste and adjust salt and pepper before serving.

Notes

Serve over creamy mashed potatoes or buttered rice for an ideal pairing. Cool leftovers quickly and store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
