A hearty casserole that combines the rich flavors of French onion soup with tender ground beef, fluffy rice, and creamy cheese.
1 small yellow onion, chopped (highly recommended for flavor!)
1 lb ground beef
3 cups cooked white rice
1 can (10.5 oz) condensed French onion soup
1 packet (1 oz) Dry Onion Soup/Dip Mix
1 cup sour cream
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper (skip the extra salt)
1/2 cup Beef Broth (optional)
1 tsp Onion Powder
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add ground beef and chopped yellow onion and cook until beef is browned and onions are soft. Drain excess fat.
Stir in the dry onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. (Note: We skipped adding extra salt here because the soup mix is salty enough!).
In a large bowl, mix the seasoned beef, cooked rice, condensed soup, beef broth (optional, for extra moisture), and sour cream until well combined.
Spread the mixture evenly in the baking dish. Top generously with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.
This recipe is designed to be mixed together for the creamiest results. However, if you prefer distinct layers (as shown in the photos), you can layer the beef on the bottom and rice on top instead of mixing!
