A comforting meatloaf that merges the classic flavors of French onion soup with hearty ground beef, caramelized onions, and melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • Ground Beef: 2 pounds (or turkey for a lean option)
  • Caramelized Onions: 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • Breadcrumbs: 1 cup (or gluten-free alternative)
  • Shredded Cheese: ½ cup (Swiss or Gruyère)
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Garlic Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Thyme: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt and Pepper: To taste
  • Optional: Onion soup mix for extra flavor

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the sliced onions in olive oil over medium heat for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and fragrant.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, cheese, egg, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Add the cooled caramelized onions and mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into a loaf and place it on a lined baking sheet or in a loaf pan.
  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake the meatloaf for 50-60 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  5. Let the meatloaf rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For best results, avoid overmixing the meat mixture to prevent a dense loaf. Consider adding herbs like basil or oregano for added flavor.
