A comforting mashup of classic sloppy joes and French onion flavors, featuring caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and melty Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat until it shimmers.
  2. Add the sliced onion and stir to coat. Cook the onion, stirring occasionally, until golden and deeply caramelized, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Push the onions to the side and add the ground beef. Brown until there is no pink remaining.
  5. Drain any excess fat from the pan.
  6. Stir the caramelized onions into the beef. Mix in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  7. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes to meld the flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  8. Toast the hamburger buns lightly until golden brown.
  9. Scoop the beef and onion mixture onto each bun bottom. Top with shredded Swiss cheese. Cover with the top bun and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Take your time with the onions for proper caramelization. Use 85% lean beef for flavor, and deglaze the pan if necessary to enhance flavor.
