A custardy, golden-baked casserole made with French bread, perfect for brunch and easily prepared the night before.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Whisk the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  2. Grease a 9×13 baking dish. Place the cubed bread in an even layer in the dish.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slowly, pressing lightly so all cubes are coated.
  4. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the fridge and uncover.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top of the soaked bread.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, until the top is golden.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes, then cut into squares and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

For a richer flavor, try using brioche or challah. You can make this dairy-free by substituting almond or oat milk and dairy-free butter.
