A cozy, hands-off breakfast casserole made with Texas toast, soaked in a sweet custard and baked until puffed and golden.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of Texas toast
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray. Arrange the Texas toast slices in a single layer or slightly overlapping to fit.
  2. Whisk the eggs in a large mixing bowl until smooth. Add the milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is uniform.
  3. Pour the custard evenly over the layered toast, pressing down gently so all slices absorb the liquid.
  4. Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, or at least 6 hours.
  5. Remove the plastic wrap and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the casserole for 45 to 50 minutes, or until it is puffed, set in the center, and golden brown on top.
  6. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then cut into squares and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

For a lighter version, reduce the heavy cream and sugar. Substitute day-old bread if Texas toast is unavailable.
