Overnight French Toast Casserole

A comforting and easy-to-make brunch dish that soaks up warm vanilla and cinnamon flavors overnight.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of bread (French or brioche)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and spread them evenly in the dish.
  3. Whisk the eggs until blended, then add milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. Pour the custard evenly over the bread cubes and press down lightly.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes until golden brown and set.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving with syrup and powdered sugar.

Notes

For a richer crumb, use brioche. Day-old bread works best.
