A custardy, golden-brown French toast casserole perfect for busy mornings and feeding a crowd.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of bread (French or brioche recommended)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the loaf into 1- to 1.5-inch cubes and spread them evenly in the prepared dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until combined. Add the milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt, and whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes. Press down gently to help the bread absorb the custard. Make sure the surface looks evenly moistened.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best texture.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden brown.
  7. Let cool for a few minutes, then serve warm with maple syrup or powdered sugar.

Notes

For best results, use slightly stale bread. Can be prepared a day ahead and baked in the morning.
